Design Brief :
Our Mentor, our prestigious client late Mr. Balan desired to donate some funds to this building at IISER, in the memory of her beloved late wife, Indrani Balan.
The building is intended mainly for the educational and training activities for school going students in the field of science.
The space requirements were-
A 350 seater classroom, tutorial rooms, dry and wet labs, a large size library, exhibition spaces, recording room, and admin office were the prominent space requirements.
Archicon design brief based on the client's brief :-
All the other buildings in the campus are mainly research labs and allied structures.
In addition there are residential buildings and admin buildings along with some classroom complexes.
This proposed building as it was intended for the young students, must have a vibrant, refreshing character, little different than the rest of the campus.
The plot size was narrow and elongated.
To give this structure, an institutional feel, we designed a curvilinear building flowing smoothly along the curve of the road.
It's a 4 storied structure with ground and first floor accommodations, admin, tutorial rooms and laboratories.
Third floor houses the library and the top floor is for the exhibition spaces- indoor and outdoor.
The 350 seater classroom is a separate unit with a cafeteria and open amphitheater on the terrace.
The character of the structure is a blend of the existing material of terracotta bricks and vibrant pastel colours of white, grey and Green.
The entire building form has a lot of common spaces for informal interactions, completely day lighted and naturally ventilated.
It is sure to add to the beauty of the campus and inspire students to get maximum benefit of the facilities.
